Another great episode. I don’t remember being as grossed out about Lea Thompson’s relationship with Howard as a kid, but now it just feels weird. If our cat suddenly began speaking English then I might enjoy having conversations with it, but I doubt we would start dating anytime soon. More than anything as a kid I think I just wondered about the, uh, “logistics” of such a relationship. Again, more disturbing as an adult.

A long, long time ago a friend of mine described something as a “picture of a joke.” It’s been too long, but the gist of it was that while a joke is funny, a picture of a joke isn’t funny at all. It was his way of explaining, for example, when one culture mimics another culture. Without context, it just doesn’t make much sense. I’ve always thought that way about Howard the Duck — that it was more “pictures of jokes” than real laughs.

I can’t remember the last time I saw this film. It wasn’t in the 80s, but I don’t think it’s been since my kids were born either (so, 14 years). I remember all of the scenes you mentioned with Howard and Lea Thompson and none of the ones with the Dark Lords. That entire part of the plot escapes me. Like you, I can also sing most of the song.

I don’t have any insight and I’m headed to IMDB next, but I get the feeling that this movie was supposed to be R or PG-13 and somewhere along the way someone forced them to dumb things down for a more immature audience. Like you said, the mish-mash of themes and tones seem disjointed.

They call him Howard… THE Duck…

You’ve probably remembered the best parts of the film, though I think the fight with the Dark Lords is cool. Overall, a swing and a miss!
