Fell behind again and I’m catching up, Doug.

You know, there was a discussion on a retro gaming podcast in which the hosts compiled their list of the worst Atari 2600 games–which rightly didn’t include E.T., but did include Zaxxon. Ever play it on the 2600? They couldn’t do the isomorphic projection of the arcade game, so they made it a head-on shooter from behind your ship. The podcasters rubbished the game until one of them asked the key question: If this game was named anything other than Zaxxon, would it still be a worst pick? They agreed that it might not be, but because of how it changed Zaxxon, it was looked down upon. If you played the Atari game first and then found the arcade version, it might actually be the other way around. Your thoughts on the Jaws sequels as being good “other movies” and viewing movies out of their production sequence brought this to mind, not to mention the sudden mention of E.T..

That’s awesome. Glad I’m not the only one who sees it that way. So what’s your opinion of 3 & 4?

  3. Michael says:

To be honest, Doug, I’ve never seen 3 or 4. Or 2. (And I only just saw the original within the last year or so.) In my younger days, my parents were a bit overly protective. In later years, I just haven’t gotten around to seeing a lot of movies from those days until the last few years now. Been ploughing through as many as I can many with my wife (who grew up even worse off than I did as far as her parents went). I listen to CCCR and Forgotten Flix and such to find out about movies like these out on the periphery. I’ll definitely be checking them out because how do you skip Lou Gossett, Jr., in Jaws 3, right?
